Shoulder asymmetry support: Powell Raise + Kneeling Scapular Slide + Half-kneeling single-arm overhead press

Targeted scapular strengthening and unilateral work to address imbalances between shoulders.

Shoulder asymmetry (one side tighter, higher, or weaker) is very common and can lead to discomfort or poor movement patterns. This routine uses unilateral work to address imbalances.

You will do a Powell Raise (side-lying), kneeling scapular slide with a towel, and a half-kneeling single-arm overhead press. The session takes about 3 minutes and emphasizes control on each side independently.

When to try this

  • You notice one shoulder sits higher or feels tighter than the other
  • One side feels weaker during pressing or pulling movements
  • You want to improve overall shoulder symmetry and scapular control

If you have existing shoulder issues, consult a professional.

Why this sequence works

  1. Powell Raise isolates the lower trap and scapular retractors on one side at a time.
  2. Kneeling Scapular Slide with Towel improves scapular mobility and strength in a controlled kneeling position.
  3. Half-kneeling single-arm overhead press builds unilateral overhead strength and stability while challenging core control.

1. Powell Raise

Lie on your side on an incline bench with your arm straight down holding a dumbbell. Raise the dumbbell until your arm is perpendicular to the floor, focusing on retracting your shoulder blade. Lower with control. Perform the prescribed reps per side.

2. Kneeling Scapular Slide with Towel

Kneel on a towel with your elbows down, push the towel forward and pull your hands slightly apart. Continuously push your forearms forward while lowering and raising your upper body slowly. Focus on smooth scapular movement.

3. Half-kneeling single-arm overhead press

Get into a half-kneeling position and hold a kettlebell at shoulder height with your elbow tucked. Press the kettlebell straight up toward the ceiling while keeping your ribcage stacked and core engaged. Lower with control. Perform the prescribed reps per side.
